I went to install iTunes 7, as iTunes 6 informed me that there was a new version. Then the following error occured;

Error 1714. The older version of QuickTime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group.

Solution
Search the registry for “quicktime.msi” and “itunes.msi”. Delete the folder ABOVE where this key lies.

  1. Thanks, running “regedit” and deleting the parent key fixed this for me.

  2. Glad to hear it :)

  3. I, as well have gotten the same mesage (”Error 1714. The older version of QuickTime cannot be removed. Contact your technical support group”) when I tried to install a newer version of Quicktime. And I have already tried to do the regedit fix that you outlined in this thread, and it didn’t work for me, and the files needed are nowhere to be found(even tried file recovery software to restore the deleted file)

Now here is why… After recieving the error message above, I uninstalled quicktime using Smarty Uninstaller 2006 professional, and now I still get the same error message, as well as “error1603 - Fatal error during installation- consult windows installer help, MSI.CHM, or MSDN for more information.”

So, in addition to not being able to update the software, all my quicktime associations, browser plugins, etc. are gone!! the Uninstaller removed EVERYTHING from the registry!!!!
I have tried everything from installing older versions, to installs that were integrated with other software(i.e.- combustion4). I’ve been thru every page of help on Apple.com and looked thru hundreds of other sites and magazines, and still nothing has worked!! Please help!!
I would normally take some time and figure it out on my own, but my 8 yr old daughter is VERY upset that she has no music to listen to on her new IPOD that her grandparents bought her!! LOL
So, any information on how to get music onto an IPod without using ITunes, would be greatly appreciated, as well

  4. Search the registry for “quicktime.msi” and “itunes.msi”. Delete the folder ABOVE where this key lies.

This did the trick. I don’t like to muck about in the registry, and I tried several cleanup routines, including Microsoft’s Windows Install Cleanup, but the registry deletions. did the trick.

  5. Hi,
I called the apple tech support, 1-800-275-2273. A very helpful agent walked me through.

    1) Go to http://www.microsoft.com
    2) In search type ‘Cleanup utility’
    3) Select the first one ‘Description of the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility’
    4) Save onto Desktop
    5) Go to start menu, find and click on ‘Windows Installer Cleanup’
    6) It will give u a list of files, go to ‘Qicktime’ and hit ‘Remove’
    7) YOU SHOULD BE ALL DONE!!!!!!

WORKED FOR ME…. THANKS, APPLE SUPPORT!!!!!!

  6. I went to http://www.microsoft.com/en/us/default.aspx and downloaded the windows msicuu2.exe and ran it. But there was no list, it ran and completed automatically. Still same error 1714. I don’t know how Bill Gates ever got rich!

  7. This fix worked out well for me. I really appreciate it!
