Hello from Germany,

I know that's an old posting, but I hope to get an answer...

I added these lines to "/etc/security/limits.conf":
mysql soft nofile 4096
mysql hard nofile 4096

The other files you see below:

/etc/pam.d/su
--------------------------
auth sufficient pam_rootok.so
auth include common-auth
account include common-account
password include common-password
session include common-session
session optional pam_xauth.so

/etc/pam.d/login
--------------------------
auth required pam_securetty.so
auth include common-auth
auth required pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_mail.so
account include common-account
password include common-password
session include common-session
session required pam_resmgr.so

Do I have to change/add anything or is this ok?

"One more thing to make sure of is that the su pam config file (/etc/pam.d/su) is using pam_limits.so, as that is the pam module which enforces limits."

How to do this?

Adding:
session required /lib/security/pam_limits.so

to "/etc/pam.d/login" ???

Is that the trick?

Thank everyone for an answer!

Thanks for this posting. We're running mysql 5.0.x on linux and, indeed, were seeing this exact symptom. We followed all the instructions and have confirmed that mysql now has plenty of open files allowed, but are still seeing this error when we get to 1138 connections (yep, same numberr every time).

Anyone have an idea as to what else this could be?

Thanks so much!

All people deserve good life time and loan or just consolidation loan will make it much better. Because people's freedom is grounded on money state.

Dave, I'm afraid this solution is very Linux-specific, the operating system architectures are quite different, and PAM is not present in windows.

It is _possible_ that windows has similar limits, but I have no idea of how one would go about finding them or raising them (if they exist!)

You're absolutely right, David, if you disabled the pam_limits.so module you would have no limits.

Question; without the addition of the pam_limits.so to pam.d/login, wouldn't there effectively be no limits? Or are there always limits by default, you then have to include the pam limits file before you can raise them?

Appreciate this posting! I forgot about those pam limits, this is just what I needed, thanks for reminding me. I added (without quotes)

"session required /lib/security/pam_limits.so"

to "/etc/pam.d/login"
