I added these lines to “/etc/security/limits.conf”:
mysql soft nofile 4096
mysql hard nofile 4096

The other files you see below:

/etc/pam.d/su

account include common-account
password include common-password
session include common-session
session optional pam_xauth.so

/etc/pam.d/login

auth required pam_securetty.so
auth include common-auth
auth required pam_nologin.so
auth required pam_mail.so

password include common-password
session include common-session
session required pam_resmgr.so

Do I have to change/add anything or is this ok?

We followed all the instructions and have confirmed that mysql now has plenty of open files allowed, but are still seeing this error when we get to 1138 connections (yep, same numberr every time). It is _possible_ that windows has similar limits, but I have no idea of how one would go about finding them or raising them (if they exist!)
