xVid and DivX on Ubuntu (Linux)

Looking to install Xvid or Divx on Ubuntu? Forget downloading source packages and compiling, simply grab VLC! (Applies to windows users too, how groovey is that?!?)

For Ubuntu users
Open up the file /etc/apt/sources.list in your favourite text editor and add the following lines.

deb http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ breezy universe
deb-src http://au.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ breezy universe

Save the file, then back at the terminal type

apt-get update
apt-get install vlc

And your done ! VLC will be added to the gnome menu under “Sounds and Video”.

    Outstanding post.

The same applies for edgy, just making the appropriate changes in your /etc/apt/sources.list

    Great source, great find.

    Thanks, mate.

    Reading package lists… Done

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
    that package should be filed.
The following information may help resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
vlc: Depends: liba52-0.7.4 but it is not installable
Depends: libdbus-1-1 (>= 0.36.2) but it is not installable
Depends: libgnutls11 (>= 1.0.16) but it is not installable
Depends: libmpeg2-4 but it is not installable
Depends: libxosd2 (>= 2.2.13) but it is not installable

VLC is the best out there, open source to, but there are still some weird bugs in the Linux versions of the VLC player.

Quality information, incredibly well done. As well as many thanks for spending the time to genuinely blog something worthwhile. It is usually surprisingly rare to see such blogs anymore. There seem to be a whole lot more garbage these days than you’ll notice gems. In either case, just to inform you that I’m glad I uncovered your blog. Take care :)
